Background: Calcifer, a sassy, cranky, yet lovable ball of fire, is a lesser god who mysteriously fell from the sky. He was caught by Howl before he could hit the ground and perish. Calcifer didn't want to die, so he struck a deal with the wizard: in exchange for Howl's heart and a prolonged life, Howl received full access to all of Calcifer's considerable powers. Neither of them liked it after a while, but it can't be broken by people who are part of the contract and they are forbidden to talk about it. (Calcifer, however, is allowed to drop hints.)

Calcifer has been put to the task of keeping Howl's castle moving and the fires burning by way of magic; he creates the steam that makes the castle creak and groan and lurch across the country, as well as the fires that heat the water for Howl's baths. Seemingly, he does all this with utmost reluctance, but because he has Howl's heart, he has a deep understanding of the workings of his contractor. He knows that underneath it all, his master is really rather kind, and it is thanks to that kindness that he is able to live.

Special Abilities: Calcifer possesses a great deal of fire magic that is currently being used by Howl to keep his castle moving, the home fires burning, and the bathwater nice and hot, all the while confined to the fireplace.
